Northumberland coastal route

Stunning coastline and the best night skies around

The Northumberland coastal route will take you along a scenic coast in the most northerly region of the country. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this 62-mile route is one of the best road trips in England

Along the way, you’ll pass through pretty little towns and villages, including Bamburgh, Craster and Alnwick, and enjoy more than 30 miles of beaches. The area is also known for having more castles than any other county in the country.

In fact, there are more than 700 castles including Alnwick Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne Castle and Dunstanburgh Castle. Other top attractions include Holy Island, Northumberland National Park, Cragside Home and Gardens and Housesteads Roman Fort. In the Alnwick Garden, be sure to take a break and enjoy a beverage and some sweets at the cozy Treehouse café.

PaulCamper tip: If you plan to be in the Northumberland area, come nightfall, grab some blankets and find a cozy spot in a park or on a beach and watch the night skies. The region is home to the largest protected area of night skies in all of Europe, so that means there’s minimal light pollution to interrupt your stargazing!
